In a surprising turn of events, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially invited High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for questioning over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency. The invitation, which was confirmed by top sources within the anti-graft agency, comes amid a wider clampdown on public figures suspected of violating currency regulations, particularly during public functions and private celebrations.
According to EFCC insiders, the commission is acting on viral video clips and photographic evidence allegedly showing the former Niger Delta warlord and leader of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in events where naira notes were lavishly sprayed and mishandled in ways that violate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) currency handling laws.
The EFCC stated that the invitation is part of a routine investigative process and not an implication of guilt. A senior official who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Nobody is above the law. We are inviting Chief Ekpemupolo to clarify some issues concerning the handling of naira notes during certain public engagements. We are committed to enforcing financial laws without bias.”
This development comes on the heels of a recent nationwide sensitization campaign by the CBN and EFCC against the abuse of the naira, including spraying, mutilation, and excessive handling of cash at social events—practices considered disrespectful and criminal under Nigerian law.
Tompolo’s media team, when contacted, acknowledged receipt of the invitation but emphasized that the ex-militant leader remains committed to upholding the laws of the land. “High Chief Government Ekpemupolo has always shown respect for legal institutions and will cooperate fully with the EFCC to clear the air on the matter. We urge the public not to jump to conclusions,” the media aide said.
Political observers believe the timing of the invitation may raise eyebrows, especially considering Tompolo’s significant influence in the Niger Delta region and his current engagement with the Federal Government through the pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Limited, a firm linked to him.
However, EFCC maintains that the move is strictly professional and not politically motivated. The commission reiterated its commitment to enforcing financial laws fairly and ensuring that the integrity of the Nigerian currency is preserved.
As of the time of this report, Tompolo has not made any public statement, but sources suggest he is likely to appear at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja later this week.
