The looming nationwide fuel crisis has been suspended following a breakthrough in negotiations between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Refinery management.

After days of tension and threats of a shutdown of oil depots and distribution channels, NUPENG announced on Wednesday that it has suspended its planned strike action. This comes after Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and his refinery management agreed to meet the union’s key demands.

The demands, which centered on better working conditions, wage reviews, and workers’ welfare packages, had triggered heightened anxiety across the country, with long queues already beginning to resurface at filling stations in major cities.

Union leaders confirmed that Dangote personally intervened in the negotiations, assuring that his refinery — Nigeria’s largest and a key player in domestic fuel supply — would address the workers’ concerns promptly.

The suspension of the strike has brought temporary relief to Nigerians who feared another round of fuel scarcity and skyrocketing pump prices. However, NUPENG warned that it will not hesitate to resume industrial action if the agreement is not implemented in full.

👉 Nigerians are now watching closely to see if the promises made by the Dangote Refinery will translate into long-term stability in the oil and gas sector.
