Nation watches closely as Tinubu visits troubled region after Yelwata Massacre.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, amidst heightened tensions and national concern following a wave of violent attacks that have rocked the state in recent weeks.
The President touched down at exactly 12:58 PM on Tuesday at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi. His visit comes in the aftermath of a gruesome massacre in Yelwata, a community in Guma Local Government Area, which claimed several lives and left many injured and displaced.
Sources at the airport confirmed that the President was received by top state officials, including Governor Hyacinth Alia, military commanders, and traditional rulers. Tight security was observed around the airport and major access roads leading to the city center.According to the Presidency, Tinubu’s visit is aimed at holding a high-level meeting with critical stakeholders in the state, including political leaders, community elders, and security agencies.
The aim is to assess the security situation firsthand and offer Federal Government support toward restoring peace. The Yelwata massacre, which occurred earlier this month, sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for a more proactive and sustainable approach to addressing insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
The attackers, suspected to be armed militia, reportedly invaded the community in the dead of night, killing dozens and destroying homes.Speaking ahead of the President’s arrival, a senior official in the Benue State Government said:> “The people of Benue are in pain. The President’s presence is a step in the right direction. We expect urgent actions, not just condolences.
Benue, known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” has become a hotbed of violent clashes, with farmers and herders’ conflicts, banditry, and communal crises taking an enormous toll on lives and livelihoods.
As Nigerians await the outcome of the President’s meeting with stakeholders, citizens across the country are hoping that concrete and lasting solutions will emerge to end the bloodshed in Benue and other troubled regions.
