LAGOS โ€“ Nigeria has lost a distinguished military officer and statesman, Navy Captain Omoniyi Caleb Olubolade (Rtd.), who passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 70.

According to family sources, the retired naval officer collapsed while playing lawn tennis at a facility in Apapa, Lagos. Efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Born on November 30, 1954, in Ipoti-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Olubolade enlisted in the Nigerian Navy in 1974. His training took him to prestigious military institutions abroad, including the Britannia Royal Naval College in the UK and the Naval College of Engineering in India. He specialized in Weapon Electrical Engineering and attended the Command and Staff College, Jaji.

In June 1997, under General Sani Abacha’s regime, he was appointed the first Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, shortly after its creation. His tenure is remembered for establishing the Bayelsa State Council for Arts & Culture on May 4, 1998.

Political Trajectory and Ministerial Role

With Nigeriaโ€™s return to democracy in 1999, Olubolade retired from the Navy and ventured into politics. He initially joined the Action Congress (AC) and later moved to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he held key positions.

In 2010, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Minister of Special Duties, and later that year, he served as Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory.

Celebrated Legacy

Olubolade’s 70th birthday in December 2024 was marked by a high-profile celebration attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, and other dignitaries. The event showcased the respect and admiration he commanded nationwide.

His death has drawn widespread tributes from political and military leaders, acknowledging his dedication to public service and national development.
