The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has disclosed that critical amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act will be finalized and implemented ahead of the 2027 general elections.Speaking during a high-level stakeholder engagement on electoral reform, Professor Yakubu emphasized the Commission’s commitment to strengthening the legal framework governing elections in Nigeria. He noted that the proposed changes are aimed at addressing challenges encountered during previous polls, enhancing transparency, promoting credible elections, and reinforcing public trust in the electoral process.According to him, INEC has already submitted a comprehensive list of recommended amendments to the National Assembly, reflecting lessons learned from the 2019 and 2023 general elections as well as various off-cycle elections. The recommendations include proposals to clarify aspects of the electronic transmission of results, improve voter registration and authentication processes, and tighten regulations on political party conduct.“The early conclusion of the review process is essential to enable timely planning and implementation of key reforms before 2027,” Yakubu stated. “We are working closely with the National Assembly and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the amended Electoral Act is in place well before the election timetable is released.”The INEC Chairman further urged civil society organizations, political parties, the media, and the general public to remain engaged and contribute constructively to the reform process. With this assurance, stakeholders hope the anticipated legal reforms will address persistent electoral irregularities and set the stage for freer, fairer, and more credible elections in Nigeria.
