President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency joint session of the Council of State and the Police Council for Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to deliberate on the worsening security situation and other urgent national matters.
The meetings — scheduled back-to-back — are part of Tinubu’s renewed push to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, restore public trust, and drive coordinated solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.
In a statement on Monday, the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Umobong, announced that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has issued formal invitations to members of both councils, asking them to attend either physically or virtually.
According to the statement, the Council of State meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed immediately by the Police Council meeting at 2:00 p.m.
The Council of State, which includes past Presidents, ex-Heads of State, former Chief Justices, and serving State Governors, provides crucial advisory support to the President on governance and national stability. The Police Council is responsible for critical policing policies, reforms, and the appointment of top police leadership.
With Nigeria currently battling rising banditry, insurgency, and violent crimes, expectations are high that the deliberations will yield concrete security reforms and policy directions to reassure citizens.
This move underscores Tinubu’s determination to confront insecurity head-on and signals a decisive step to rally national stakeholders around lasting solutions.
