In a fiery statement ahead of the forthcoming council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Ireti Kingibe has boldly declared that the residents of Abuja are ready to demonstrate their political power and send a resounding message to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking during a media briefing, the senator representing the FCT expressed deep dissatisfaction with Wike’s leadership style, accusing him of running the territory with a “military-style arrogance” and ignoring the will and needs of indigenous communities and residents.

The people of the FCT are not slaves. They will use the upcoming council elections to show Wike that Abuja belongs to them, not to any self-imposed emperor,” Kingibe asserted.Senator Kingibe, a vocal member of the Labour Party, criticized Wike’s appointment of loyalists into key local council structures, stating that it undermines democracy and the constitutional rights of FCT natives and residents.

She added that the FCT has been subjected to policies that prioritize personal political gain over development and inclusivity. This outburst follows mounting tensions between the Minister and FCT political stakeholders, many of whom accuse him of disregarding due process and sidelining elected officials in favor of unelected allies. The coming elections are now being viewed as a litmus test for Wike’s influence and popularity in the FCT, especially as the grassroots mobilization against his leadership gathers momentum.

Kingibe further urged residents to “vote with courage, not fear,” stressing that the people of Abuja deserve a government that listens and serves, not one that dictates. As the FCT gears up for what is expected to be a fiercely contested council election, all eyes are now on whether the people will indeed make a strong political statement — or if Wike’s grip will prove too strong to unseat.
