In a move that is already stirring political waters ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) has officially announced that its presidential ticket is open to all interested aspirants, regardless of political pedigree or influence.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized that the party will not adopt any form of imposition or preferential treatment in selecting its 2027 presidential flag bearer. He said the process will be transparent, democratic, and guided strictly by the constitution of the party.
“We are opening the doors wide for any Nigerian who believes in the ideals of the Labour Party and wishes to fly our flag in 2027. Nobody will be given an unfair advantage. We are not a party of godfathers or secret anointing,” Ifoh stated.
This announcement comes amid speculation about the political future of former presidential candidate Peter Obi and whether he will once again contest under the Labour Party platform. However, the party leadership insists that while Obi remains a “key stakeholder,” he will not receive automatic candidacy.
“Peter Obi is one of our respected leaders and we acknowledge his contributions. But in the spirit of internal democracy, even he must go through the due process if he decides to run again,” Ifoh added.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to championing issues of equity, justice, and youth inclusion, urging all potential aspirants to prepare for a level-playing field.
Political analysts say the LP’s bold stance could attract a new wave of aspirants, including technocrats, youth leaders, and non-traditional politicians seeking a credible platform free from elite domination.
With 2027 inching closer, the Labour Party seems to be positioning itself as a true people-driven alternative in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
