The Federal Government has revealed that it is leveraging the ongoing Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) to push for greater representation in major global institutions.
Speaking yesterday, government officials disclosed that Nigeria is actively lobbying for seats at the United Nations Security Council, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Nigeria’s move comes amid growing calls for African nations to have stronger voices in global governance, especially in areas of peace, justice, security, maritime trade, and chemical weapons regulation. The FG noted that these positions would not only strengthen Nigeria’s influence on the international stage but also ensure Africa’s interests are well-represented in shaping global policies.
This strategic push highlights Nigeria’s ambition to reposition itself as a continental leader and a global decision-maker, moving beyond being a participant to becoming a policy influencer in world affairs.
Your Turn:
Do you think this is the right step in the right direction for Nigeria, or should the FG focus more on domestic issues before pushing for global influence? 🤔
