In a strong appeal that has sparked national discussion, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on alumni across Nigeria to give back to their alma mater as a powerful way to support and uplift the country’s ailing education sector. Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Wike emphasized that the burden of revamping educational institutions should not be left to the government alone.

He urged former students—especially those who have attained positions of influence, to return and invest in the schools that once shaped them. We must stop depending solely on government funding. Alumni must take responsibility. If we don’t support the institutions that built us, who will?” Wike asked.

He noted that alumni contributions through renovation of classrooms, provision of learning materials, scholarships, and mentorship programs could make a lasting difference, particularly in public schools that face chronic underfunding.Already, some old students’ associations are beginning to respond to Wike’s call, announcing plans for infrastructural upgrades and endowment funds in their respective schools.

Wike’s message comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with widespread educational challenges, and his words are being seen as a rallying cry for a collective rescue effort
