The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has declared that fixing Nigeria’s refineries under NNPCL’s management has been extremely difficult because the plants were abandoned for decades.
Ojulari, in a report by The PUNCH, explained that the prolonged neglect and lack of consistent maintenance left the facilities in a deteriorated state, making rehabilitation both expensive and technically demanding.
For many years, Nigerians have waited for the refineries to bounce back into operation to reduce the country’s heavy dependence on imported petroleum products. Despite billions spent on turnaround maintenance, the facilities remain inactive, leaving citizens to question where the problem truly lies.
Ojulari’s revelation has sparked heated debate nationwide. While some agree that neglect is the major factor, others insist that corruption and mismanagement in the oil and gas sector are the real reasons behind the collapse of Nigeria’s refineries.
