The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a coalition of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) on Wednesday expressed outrage after the Senate reportedly blocked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return to the red chamber.

Natasha, representing Kogi Central, had been reinstated by a court judgment that affirmed her mandate following months of political and legal battles. However, when she arrived at the National Assembly to reclaim her seat, Senate leadership allegedly declined to recognize the ruling — sparking a wave of protest within and outside the complex.

The PDP condemned the Senate’s stance, accusing its leadership of “gross disregard for the judiciary” and undermining democratic principles. In a statement, party officials said:

> “This action is not only an affront to the rule of law but also a dangerous attempt to subvert the will of the people of Kogi Central.”

Several SANs who accompanied Natasha described the refusal as a constitutional breach. They insisted that once a competent court rules on an electoral matter, every institution of government must comply, stressing that the Senate has no powers to override judicial authority.

The development triggered drama at the National Assembly complex, with Natasha’s supporters chanting solidarity songs and demanding immediate enforcement of the court’s ruling. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers to control the situation as tension rose.

Political analysts have warned that the standoff could snowball into a constitutional crisis if left unresolved, especially as it touches on the delicate balance between the judiciary and the legislature.

👉 What’s your take? Should the Senate obey the court and allow Natasha back to the red chamber, or is there more behind this political drama? Share your thoughts in the comment section!
