56 CSOs Demand Akpabio’s Resignation After Appeal Court Upholds Conviction Linked to 2019 Election

A coalition of 56 prominent Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including CISLAC, SERAP, CITAD, BudgIT, and Amnesty International Nigeria, has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to resign from office.

The demand follows the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal in Calabar, which upheld the three-year prison sentence of Professor Peter Ogban, the returning officer for the 2019 Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial election. Ogban was found guilty of manipulating election results in favor of Akpabio, who was then the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The CSOs argue that the judgment casts a shadow over Akpabio’s credibility and undermines public confidence in the integrity of the Senate leadership.
