The Abia State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for nursery and primary school pupils, citing the need to check exploitative practices and reduce financial pressure on parents.

The directive was issued by the State Ministry of Education, which explained that the growing trend of organizing elaborate graduation parties for children—complete with uniforms, entertainment, and souvenirs—had become a source of unnecessary financial burden on many families.

According to the Commissioner for Education, the government’s priority is to ensure that resources are channeled towards quality learning and teaching facilities rather than frivolous celebrations.

> “Education should not be commercialized. We have noticed that some schools now turn nursery and primary graduation into profit-making ventures. This is not acceptable,” the statement read.

The ministry added that schools are free to hold end-of-term events or class handover activities, but they must not be branded as “graduation ceremonies” for pupils who are only advancing to the next basic class.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions across the state. While some parents welcomed the move as a relief from unnecessary expenses, others argue that graduation events serve as a source of motivation and joy for children.
