Stark Critique of Economic Malaise
Peter Obi lambasted the Tinubu administration in a fiery New Year address, declaring that Nigeria is “bleeding” under its watch. He dismissed claims of progress, saying:

> “The political, economic and security situation of our country is worsening daily… Nigeria remains one of the poverty capitals of the world, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty and more than 150 million in multidimensional poverty.”

He drew a sharp contrast with the past, noting how Nigeria’s GDP plunged from roughly $574 billion in 2014 to now around $200 billion, with per capita income shrinking below $1,000.

Inflation, Poverty & Hunger Crisis
Obi said inflation has soared past 23%, the official minimum wage of ₦70,000 can’t even buy a bag of rice, and hunger is “our new national norm.” He emphasized Nigeria’s appalling ranking: 110th out of 127 on the 2024 Global Hunger Index.

Insecurity at Alarming Levels
He highlighted that Nigeria is “one of the most insecure and least peaceful nations,” citing a Global Peace Index rank of 143/163, countless displaced communities, and over 10,000 killings in two years under Tinubu.

Demand for Bold, Self‑Serving Leadership
Obi urged immediate radical reforms—cut governance costs, bolster security, strengthen health and education, and tie borrowing strictly to regenerative investments. He described the moment as “the fierce urgency of now,” borrowing from Martin Luther King Jr.

Call for United Opposition
Building from this, Obi joined forces with Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and others in a broad coalition to challenge Tinubu’s governance. In March 2025, they denounced the Rivers State emergency declaration and committed to mobilizing Nigerians and the National Assembly for constitutional resistance.

🧭 Why This Matters for Nigerians

Issue Implications

Economic Hardship With extreme poverty affecting nearly half the population, Obi’s critique underscores widespread public suffering.
Security Breakdown Rising violence and kidnappings challenge Tinubu’s claims of restored safety.
Political Shift A united opposition signals mounting pressure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi’s strong and data-driven stance not only highlights systemic failures but also rallies Nigerians toward a democratic pushback rooted in constitutional norms and civic engagement.
