In a bold and uncompromising rebuttal, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed recent claims by the Presidency suggesting that the opposition is plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the 2027 general elections.
The allegation, made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, has sparked heated political discourse nationwide. Onanuga had accused unnamed opposition figures of engineering a sinister plan to destabilize the current administration under the pretext of coalition politics.
But addressing a packed press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the accusation as a “deliberate and dangerous falsehood” meant to intimidate opposition voices and suppress legitimate democratic activity.
We are politicians, not insurgents. We don’t have bullets; we only have ballots,” Abdullahi declared.“This narrative is not just false, but harmful to the very democracy we are all trying to protect. Our commitment remains peaceful, issue-based politics. We will go to the people in 2027 with ideas, not intimidation.
The ADC, now emerging as the rallying platform for a broad opposition coalition—including political heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi—has positioned itself as the centerpiece of what it describes as a “national redemption mission.”Abdullahi emphasized that Nigerians are hungry for change, and it is within their democratic right to vote out any administration they feel has failed to deliver.
Let the APC focus on governance, not conspiracy theories. What we’re building is a coalition of conscience — Nigerians from all walks of life who are tired of hardship, insecurity, and economic mismanagement,” he added.
Political observers note that this is one of the most serious face-offs yet between the opposition and the Presidency ahead of the 2027 elections, suggesting that the battle for the soul of Nigeria’s democracy is already well underway. With increasing defections from the ruling APC to the ADC and mounting calls for a united opposition front, the ADC’s latest statement sends a clear message: the 2027 elections will be fiercely contested — not with violence, but with votes.
