In a shocking development that has raised serious concerns about internal security threats, a Nigerian soldier on leave has been arrested at a motor park in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, with 350 rounds of live ammunition concealed inside a sack.
The arrest was made by operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), who were carrying out routine checks at the bus terminal. The soldier was reportedly preparing to board a commercial vehicle out of the city when the ammunition was discovered.
According to security sources, the soldier initially attempted to deny ownership of the sack but later confessed after interrogation. He is now in military custody, and a formal investigation has been launched to determine the origin and intended destination of the ammunition.
The development has sparked outrage and fear among residents, especially in the northeast region that has endured over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and arms smuggling.
This arrest has once again raised troubling questions about the role of insiders in worsening Nigeria’s insecurity. With cases of soldiers being linked to illegal arms movement, sabotage, or information leaks, the nation’s fight against terrorism appears even more complicated.
