JUST IN:
Reports have emerged that a transport task force unit was allegedly responsible for a ghastly accident while chasing down a commercial tricycle operator (popularly known as Keke).
The incident, which occurred along the Igbogene–Ishiayi route, has thrown the area into confusion and mourning. Eyewitnesses revealed that the task force van was in hot pursuit of the Keke, leading to reckless driving that resulted in a tragic crash.
🔴 At the time of filing this report, the number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, but multiple victims are feared dead or severely injured. Passengers and bystanders were reportedly caught in the chaos, worsening the magnitude of the tragedy.
This unfortunate development has sparked widespread anger among residents, who condemned the high-handed approach often adopted by the transport task force in enforcing regulations. Many argue that the constant harassment and dangerous chases by the unit have become a threat to public safety rather than a solution.
Community leaders and civil rights advocates are now calling on the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Transport to urgently review and reform the operational guidelines of the task force. They insist that enforcement should never come at the cost of innocent lives.
Residents are demanding that those responsible for the Igbogene-Ishiayi accident be held accountable, while also urging government authorities to adopt safer, people-friendly policies that prioritize human lives over revenue collection.
