In a somber move, the Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, a statewide public holiday to mourn the tragic loss of 22 athletes and officials who perished in a horrific road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Asaba, Delta State.The victims, who were members of Team Kano, were traveling back home after representing the state in various sporting events at the festival.
Their vehicle was involved in a fatal crash along the Okene–Lokoja expressway, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries, sending shockwaves across the nation’s sporting community.Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in an official statement issued Sunday night, described the incident as “a devastating blow to the state’s sporting dreams and the aspirations of young, vibrant Nigerians who dedicated their lives to excellence and service through sports.”> “This is not just Kano’s loss — this is Nigeria’s loss. These were promising youths, coaches, and officials who gave their best to represent our state with pride. Their untimely death has left a deep scar in our hearts,” the governor said.As part of the mourning observance:All government offices, schools, and public institutions in Kano State are to remain closed today.
The state flag will fly at half-mast in honor of the deceased.A state memorial service is being planned, where the bodies of the victims will be honored posthumously, and families will receive formal condolences and support.The accident has triggered national grief, with condolences pouring in from President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Sports, state governors, and numerous sports federations.
