Famgbe, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State — As the 2025 farming season begins, Ovieya Farms, a proudly indigenous agricultural venture based in Famgbe Community, is renewing its call for strategic partnerships and support from the Bayelsa State Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and prominent sons and daughters of the Ijaw Nation to expand its rice production initiative.
Led by its CEO, Mr. Friday Ovieya, the farm recorded a significant milestone in 2024 by cultivating and distributing 100% homegrown rice entirely produced in Bayelsa State — a remarkable achievement that demonstrated the state’s potential to become a self-sufficient agricultural force.
Despite this breakthrough, Ovieya Farms has received no formal support or funding from government agencies or development institutions. Now, with land clearing already underway for the 2025 planting season, the farm faces a critical challenge: access to improved rice grains for planting.
> “We’ve shown the possibilities — clean, quality rice grown right here in Bayelsa. But to scale, we need partnerships, not promises,” said Mr. Friday Ovieya. “We are calling on the Bayelsa State Government, NDDC, and well-meaning individuals to join hands with us to build something truly transformational.”
Appeal to Ijaw Leaders
In addition to institutional stakeholders, Ovieya Farms is extending a direct and respectful appeal to notable leaders and philanthropists of the Ijaw Nation, including:
High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo)
Mr. Godfrey Tare Pondi
Mr. Kestin Pondi
> “These are respected voices of progress in Ijaw land. Their leadership has empowered many. We are calling on them to support this agricultural movement that can feed our people and create jobs across communities,” said Mr. Ovieya.
Objectives of the Call for Support
Ovieya Farms is seeking assistance in the following key areas:
Provision of improved rice grains, fertilizers, and other planting inputs
Access to mechanized equipment and irrigation tools
Support for establishing processing and storage facilities
Technical and policy backing from the Bayelsa State Government and NDDC
Strategic investments from private individuals, organizations, and Ijaw stakeholders
A Vision for Food Security, Youth Empowerment, and Economic Growth
Ovieya Farms is not just farming — it’s building a future for Bayelsa. With over a year of proven experience in production, the farm aims to:
Position Bayelsa as a commercial rice production hub in the Niger Delta
Empower Ijaw youths through agriculture-based employment and training
Reduce reliance on foreign rice and boost local food self-sufficiency
> “This is a call to every Ijaw son and daughter — let’s build our future with our hands, our soil, and our hearts. Bayelsa can feed herself and beyond. We just need the will and the support,” concluded Mr. Ovieya.
