A fresh wave of political tension has swept through Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber following the abrupt removal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from her committee leadership role by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The Senator representing Kogi Central was relieved of her duties as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Local Content and replaced with Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North East. The change was formally announced during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Though no official reason was given for the reshuffle, the decision has sparked speculation of political maneuvering and vendetta, especially given Senator Natasha’s rising influence and her recent outspoken positions on issues of national importance.

Senator Aniekan Bassey, a newcomer to the Senate but a former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, is seen as an Akpabio loyalist. His appointment is widely interpreted as a move by the Senate President to strengthen his control over key committees and surround himself with political allies, particularly from the South-South region.

Political analysts and civil society voices have raised concerns over what they describe as a trend of silencing independent-minded lawmakers. Senator Natasha has gained national recognition for her bold advocacy for transparency, youth empowerment, and fair representation.

Critics argue that her removal may be a calculated effort to curb dissent within the chamber and send a warning to other lawmakers who may challenge the status quo.

As the political chessboard in the Senate continues to shift, Nigerians are watching closely to see what this latest power play means for legislative independence and national policymaking.
