Prominent Nigerian broadcaster and political analyst, Dr. Reuben Abati, has taken a swipe at opposition figures championing the idea of a single-term presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during a political roundtable, Abati described the proposal as a reflection of “political desperation” and a weak tactic that fails to resonate with the realities of Nigeria’s complex political landscape.

According to him, rather than offering a clear national development agenda or ideological shift, proponents of the one-term promise are merely seeking shortcuts to power.

> “This one-term presidency mantra is not only impractical but also shows a lack of deep strategic thinking. Nigerians want credible leadership, not gimmicks,” Abati said.

His comments come amid growing discussions, especially among opposition camps, about the possibility of fielding candidates who would commit to serving only a single four-year term to ‘fix’ the nation and ensure power rotation.

However, Abati believes that such a commitment may backfire politically, as it casts doubt on the candidate’s long-term vision and capacity to deliver sustainable governance.

👉 What are your thoughts on Dr. Reuben Abati’s take? Do you agree that the one-term presidency idea is desperate and ineffective, or do you think it’s a smart strategy?
