Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), founded by Niger Delta leader Government Ekpemupolo, has emerged as a critical force in protecting Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure and combating crude oil theft across the Niger Delta.
Since securing the pipeline surveillance contract from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in the third quarter of 2022, Tantita has deployed a community-based security model aimed at tackling oil theft, pipeline vandalism, illegal bunkering, and economic sabotage—long-standing challenges that previously drained billions in national revenue.

Overcoming Niger Delta Terrain Through Community Intelligence
The Niger Delta’s complex network of creeks, swamps, and waterways has historically limited the effectiveness of conventional security forces in curbing oil theft. However, Tantita Security Services has adopted a localized security strategy by recruiting thousands of youths from host communities.

These personnel, drawn from ethnic groups including Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri, and Isoko, possess deep knowledge of the terrain, enabling efficient surveillance operations.
In addition to human intelligence, Tantita utilizes modern surveillance tools such as drone monitoring and aerial reconnaissance, improving threat detection, rapid response, and protection of oil pipelines across the region.
Security analysts and stakeholders across the Niger Delta continue to describe the Tantita framework as a strategic national asset for Nigeria’s economic stability.
Massive Reduction in Oil Theft and Production Recovery
Tantita’s operations have significantly reduced crude oil theft and restored stability to Nigeria’s oil production sector.

Before 2022, Nigeria reportedly lost between 100,000 and 102,000 barrels of crude oil per day due to pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering. However, data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) shows that oil losses dropped dramatically to about 9,600 barrels per day by mid-2025, representing more than 90% reduction.
Crude oil production has also improved, with Nigeria recording an average of 1.46 million barrels per day in January 2026, according to secondary sources referenced by Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
These gains have been achieved through the dismantling of illegal pipeline connections, destruction of clandestine refineries (commonly called “kpofire” sites), and disruption of bunkering networks across the Niger Delta.

Employment Opportunities and Youth Empowerment
Beyond securing oil pipelines, Tantita Security Services has created thousands of direct jobs for Niger Delta youths, providing alternatives to illegal oil activities.
Through partnerships with communities and local stakeholders, the initiative has also contributed to the creation of over 200,000 indirect jobs through agricultural programs, skills training, fishing initiatives, and ICT empowerment schemes.
Former bunker operators have also been integrated into rice farming cooperatives and other sustainable livelihood programs, helping to transform the regional economy.
Environmental Protection and Community Development
The reduction in pipeline vandalism has significantly lowered oil spills, protecting the fragile ecosystems of the Niger Delta that support fishing and farming.

Tantita’s corporate social responsibility efforts have also supported security infrastructure upgrades, including the refurbishment of barracks, provision of vehicles for security agencies, and operational support for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
These initiatives have strengthened security collaboration and reduced crime across several Niger Delta communities.

Stakeholders Reject Calls for Contract Termination
Recent calls for the termination of Tantita’s pipeline surveillance contract have been widely rejected by stakeholders who argue that the initiative has delivered measurable results.
According to regional leaders and policy experts, ending the contract could create security gaps, revive oil theft syndicates, and threaten Nigeria’s oil production recovery.

The leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (Third Phase) has also expressed strong support for the company’s role in maintaining peace and stability in the Niger Delta.
A Strategic Model for Nigeria’s Economic Recovery
Observers say Tantita Security Services represents more than a surveillance company—it has become a strategic pillar for economic recovery, environmental protection, and regional stability.

By combining community participation, modern surveillance technology, and strong stakeholder collaboration, the model continues to support Nigeria’s efforts to protect its most critical economic asset: crude oil production.
As Nigeria works to strengthen its economy and secure the Niger Delta, experts believe sustaining and improving the Tantita framework remains essential for long-term national progress.
