In a significant move to support the families of police officers who died in the line of duty, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has disbursed a total of N22.98 billion to 8,311 beneficiaries between 2018 and 2024. This initiative addresses a longstanding backlog of insurance claims and underscores the Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families. Breakdown of Dis-bursementsThe disbursements were executed in multiple phases: Phases 1–8 (2018–2024): N17.8 billion was distributed to 6,465 families. Phase 9 (February 2025): An additional N2.99 billion was allocated to 706 beneficiaries, covering policy years 2020–2024. Phase 10 (April 2025): N5.75 billion was disbursed to 2,148 families, addressing insurance policies for the years 2018–2019 and 2021–2024. These efforts culminate in a total of N22.98 billion paid to 8,311 families of deceased officers. Launch of the Insurance Claims Management PortalTo streamline the claims process and enhance transparency, the NPF unveiled the Nigeria Police Insurance Claims Management Portal (npfinsuranceclaimsmgt.ng) in February 2025. This digital platform is designed to eliminate bureaucratic delays and provide seamless access to benefits for the families of fallen officers. Addressing Historical Back logs Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, acknowledged that upon assuming office, his administration inherited a 13 year backlog of unsettled insurance claims dating from 2010 to 2023. This situation had left many families in financial distress. Through concerted efforts, the NPF has made significant progress in resolving these outstanding claims. Capacity Building for Efficient Service Delivery line with the digital transformation, the NPF has introduced specialized training programs for Insurance Desk Officers across 17 Zonal Commands and 37 State Commands. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency in claims management and ensure prompt service delivery to beneficiaries. Regional Disbursements beyond the national efforts, state commands have also extended financial support to families of fallen officers. For instance, in February 2025, the Kebbi State Police Command presented cheques totaling over N46 million to 23 families, while the Zamfara State Police Command disbursed over N94 million to 23 families in March 2025. Commitment to Welfare these initiatives reflect the NPF’s unwavering commitment to honoring its fallen heroes and providing necessary support to their families. The Force continues to prioritize the welfare of its personnel, both serving and retired, ensuring that their sacrifices are duly recognized and compensated. The big question is, will the money be useful for this purpose.
