June 12, 2025 —His Excellency, President (Alhaji) Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has officially granted a Presidential pardon to the former Executive Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, famously known as The Odidigboigbo of the Universe.This historic pardon comes as part of a nationwide clemency initiative unveiled today in commemoration of Democracy Day.
The exercise was carried out in accordance with Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), empowering the President to grant reprieves, pardons, and clemency to deserving individuals.Chief Ibori, who served as Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007, was previously convicted in the UK over financial misconduct but has continued to wield considerable political influence in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta.Reactions have been swift across the country.
While many supporters celebrate what they describe as divine vindication and political reconciliation, critics warn of the implications for the nation’s anti-corruption image.Community leaders and political stakeholders in Delta State have welcomed the development, calling it “a powerful act of national healing and reintegration.” Social media has since been flooded with congratulatory messages to Chief Ibori and others pardoned.Congratulations to Chief James Ibori and all recipients of today’s Presidential pardon.
