President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that his administration is currently in advanced discussions with Ogoni leaders to resolve the decades-long disputes that have stalled oil production in the region.
Speaking on Wednesday during the official commissioning of the Otakikpo Crude Oil Export Terminal in Rivers State, President Tinubu emphasized that the federal government is committed to restoring peace, fostering unity, and unlocking the full economic potential of the Niger Delta.
According to him, the dialogue aims to address the historical grievances of the Ogoni people, promote sustainable development, and ensure that communities in the oil-rich region benefit directly from natural resource exploitation.
> “The peace and prosperity of the Niger Delta remain central to our national growth. We are engaging constructively with Ogoni leaders to bring lasting solutions to issues that have lingered for far too long,” Tinubu stated.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s determination to create an enabling environment for oil and gas investment, while prioritizing environmental restoration and community participation.
The newly commissioned Otakikpo Terminal, located in Rivers State, is expected to boost Nigeria’s daily crude output and contribute significantly to foreign exchange earnings.
Observers believe the renewed engagement with Ogoni leaders could pave the way for the resumption of operations in the long-abandoned Ogoniland oil fields, once managed by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which halted operations following the unrest of the 1990s.
As the nation watches closely, stakeholders hope that this initiative will not only reopen oil flow but also heal old wounds in one of Nigeria’s most important yet volatile oil-producing regions.
