In a bold and historic step toward achieving steady and efficient electricity across Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has officially inaugurated the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) — a move widely seen as a game-changer for the state’s power sector.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the Executive Chamber of the Light House, Awka, marks another milestone in Soludo’s ongoing mission to build a “liveable and prosperous homeland.” It also signals the state’s readiness to take full control of electricity regulation and distribution in line with the 2023 Nigerian Electricity Act, which allows states to operate independent power markets.

Heading the newly established commission is Prof. Frank Nwoye Okafor, who will serve as both Chairman and Chief Executive Commissioner. Other members of the five-man team include Engr. Geoffrey Okwuchukwu Nwokoye, Dr. Nnaemeka O. Ewelukwa, Engr. Nosike Emmanuel, and Barr. Chijioke Nnaemeka Obi, all appointed as Executive Commissioners.

Governor Soludo, while congratulating the appointees, described them as “some of the finest brains Anambra can offer.” He expressed gratitude for their willingness to serve, urging them to uphold transparency, accountability, and professionalism as they drive the state into a new era of electricity governance.

> “This commission will play a crucial role in ensuring that electricity generation, distribution, and pricing are done in a manner that benefits Ndi Anambra,” the governor said.
“Our goal is clear — to make Anambra a model of energy efficiency and reliability in Nigeria.”

The Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, noted that the domestication of the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023 for Anambra was a deliberate and strategic move by the state government. According to him, the law provides the legal foundation for the commission’s creation and outlines its authority in regulating the power sector.

In his inaugural speech, Prof. Okafor assured that the expectations of Ndi Anambra would be met with diligence, integrity, and innovation. He acknowledged that while challenges abound, the commission is determined to correct past inefficiencies, minimize power losses, and improve both the quality and quantity of electricity supply across the state.

> “We are committed to driving a sustainable power market that supports industries, SMEs, and households while ensuring fair pricing and energy accountability,” he said.

The establishment of ASERC is expected to attract investment, enhance power reliability, and strengthen economic productivity across Anambra’s urban and rural communities.

With this latest move, Governor Soludo’s administration continues to demonstrate its commitment to practical governance — turning policies into measurable development outcomes.
