Tinubu Gives Fresh Hope on State Police: Is Nigeria Finally Ready for Multi-Level Policing?
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the long-awaited multi-level policing system, commonly referred to as state police, will soon be implemented.
He made this known on Thursday night while speaking at the national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Friday at the Conference Centre of the State House, Abuja.
The President admitted that insecurity remains a major challenge across the country and emphasized that Nigeria’s highly centralized policing structure needs urgent reform. According to him, multi-level policing will help strengthen internal security, improve intelligence gathering at the grassroots, and ensure faster response to criminal activities.
Tinubu explained that empowering states to establish their own police formations would enhance community-based security, as local officers are more familiar with their environment and security challenges.
The push for state police has continued to gain support amid rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, cult-related violence, and communal clashes nationwide. While many stakeholders believe state police could significantly curb insecurity, critics warn against possible abuse by political leaders if adequate legal and institutional safeguards are not put in place.
As discussions continue at the national level, Nigerians are eager to see how soon the proposal will move from policy talks to actual implementation.
